Moroney explained that the color shift actually began when she wrote a track called “Medicine.” The song felt so inherently pink to her that she originally planned to title the entire third album Medicine. However, the creative direction pivoted once she wrote the track “Cloud9” alongside country artist and songwriter Ernest.
“I had the title for a while and I got to a place the first quarter of last year where I was just really happy. I was happy with how my career was going. I just felt lighter.”
Moroney noted that “Cloud9” is a rare, straightforward love song for her, lacking the typical heartbreak or tragic twists found in some of her other hits. The number nine also holds personal significance, as her birthday is October 9th. Once the title was set, Moroney immediately envisioned the album cover, the music videos, and the tour design bathed in pink.
Unbelievable Collaborations: Kacey Musgraves and Ed Sheeran
Perhaps the most exciting news for Megan Moroney fans is the confirmation of two massive collaborations on the upcoming record.
The first is with Kacey Musgraves on a sassy, mid-tempo track called “Bells and Whistles.” Moroney has been a vocal superfan of Musgraves since the Same Trailer Different Park era, crediting Musgraves clever songwriting as a major inspiration for her own career. When her team asked if there was a dream addition to the album, Moroney requested Musgraves for background vocals, treating it as a total Hail Mary.
Instead of just singing in the background, Musgraves sent back a recording of herself singing the entire second verse without changing a single lyric or vocal inflection. Moroney admitted she broke down in happy tears upon hearing the final cut.
The second feature brings global pop star Ed Sheeran into the country fold on a track titled “I Only Miss You.” The two connected after meeting at a Bluebird Cafe event in Nashville, where Sheeran revealed that his family constantly listens to Moroney’s music. After exchanging a few song ideas back and forth, Moroney sent him a highly traditional country track.
Fans expecting a club ready pop crossover will be surprised. Moroney confirmed that “I Only Miss You” is a stripped down, deeply traditional country song featuring just two guitars, quiet drums, and a pedal steel. Hearing Sheeran’s voice on a pure country arrangement is something she is incredibly eager for fans to experience.
Meaningful Songwriting and Fan Connection
Moroney also took time to discuss the stories behind a few already released tracks. She revealed that “Six Months Later” was the only song written during a recent writers retreat on a boat. The group knew the track was so good that they abandoned all other ideas for the rest of the trip. Interestingly, she purposely increased the song’s tempo during the writing process simply because she wanted it to be fast enough to listen to while running.
On a much deeper note, Moroney discussed the emotional weight of “Beautiful Things.” She originally penned the song for her two year old niece as a guide for navigating life’s inevitable disappointments, like being left out of a party or dealing with a first heartbreak. However, the song’s meaning expanded immensely when she recently performed it for patients at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
“It was the hardest time I’ve had to sing that song. Obviously not getting invited to a party is nowhere near what the people at St. Jude have to experience, but they relate to it in the same way and it kind of makes you feel less alone.”
Building the ‘Cloud9’ Arena Tour
Looking ahead to the Cloud9 Tour, Moroney is taking full advantage of her first massive headlining arena run. She is heavily involved in the production details, ensuring the stage design reflects her whimsical and dreamy new era.
She confirmed that the stage will feature a custom thrust built in the shape of the number nine. Moroney expressed pure disbelief that she can now simply request massive, custom production elements and watch her team bring them to life.
Beyond the live show, she is also heavily focused on physical media. Moroney revealed that she has designed multiple exclusive vinyl variants for Cloud9. Rather than just swapping the cover color, she intentionally designed different front and back artwork, and even altered the tracklist order on certain versions to give dedicated collectors a truly unique experience.
