Jamey Johnson & Ronnie Dunn Play “Never Gonna Be” LIVE
Jamey Johnson has reunited with Ronnie Dunn for a powerful new version of Never Gonna Be, a song that holds deep personal meaning. Written by Dunn and Terry McBride about Johnson more than 15 years ago, the track was finally released on 12 September. A live performance video has since given fans a new way to experience one of country music’s most reflective collaborations.
A Song That Comes Full Circle
When Dunn and McBride first wrote Never Gonna Be back in 2010, Jamey Johnson was an emerging songwriter making his name in Nashville. The lyrics tell the story of the many hopeful artists who pour into Music City “riding on high hopes, living on dreams,” hoping to make their mark before the town decides whether they are “gonna be, has been, or never gonna be.”
“It reminds me of those days when everybody out there was working hard and trying to get noticed.”
Johnson recalls the early days when he would carry his guitar down Broadway, playing at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge before heading back to find his old Dodge had been towed. For him, Never Gonna Be captures that mix of hunger and heartbreak familiar to anyone who has chased a song through Nashville’s neon lights.
Ronnie Dunn’s Inspiration
Ronnie Dunn says the idea for the song came while he was watching Johnson’s rise as part of a new generation of country outlaws. During a Brooks & Dunn tour stop in Canada, Dunn and McBride began writing, imagining Johnson’s voice and character as their muse.
“We were just looking at the new wave of outlaws coming into town.”
Dunn remembers being fascinated by Johnson’s mix of raw honesty and rebellion, an artist unafraid to write about real life. For Dunn, who grew up in conservative West Texas, Johnson’s long hair and free spirit represented a refreshing new energy in Nashville.
The Lyrics That Tell the Story
The song paints a vivid portrait of an artist trying to find his place in the world:
New kid in town, he’s a stoner / Singing through a homegrown grin / Up on stage he’s a loner / Got a small band of outlaw friends.
Those lines, Dunn says, were written with affection, a mix of humour, admiration, and truth. Johnson admits he was not sure what to do with the song when he first heard it years ago, but the idea stayed with him until the time felt right.
“I guess I never did know which of those categories I fell into. Now I think I do: I’m a ‘never gonna be,’ and I’m OK with that.”
Recording “Never Gonna Be”
Johnson finally brought the song to life earlier this year while working with producer Buddy Cannon, a Nashville legend who has guided artists from Willie Nelson to Kenny Chesney. When Cannon sent the song back to Dunn to confirm the details, Dunn had forgotten about it until Johnson forwarded the original email from 2010.
Once Dunn heard it again, the memories came flooding back. Johnson says hearing the band play the first notes in the studio felt like closure. “It was fun getting to hear the first notes that were played by the band and know we are finally doing this,” he says.
“It’s good that we got to cut it and I’m excited to put it out.”
Buddy Cannon’s Enduring Influence
While Never Gonna Be is deeply personal for Jamey Johnson, he insists it is also a tribute to Buddy Cannon, his longtime mentor, collaborator and one of country music’s most respected producers. Johnson first met Cannon in 2001, and their partnership has shaped some of his most acclaimed work, including George Strait’s 2006 hit Give It Away.
- Buddy Cannon’s songwriting credits include Dream of Me, Set ’Em Up Joe, and I’ve Come to Expect It From You
- His production career spans Reba McEntire, Alison Krauss, Willie Nelson, and Shania Twain
“Everybody I know in the country music business has got a great story to tell about Buddy Cannon.”
Johnson describes Cannon as a rare figure in the industry, honest, generous, and steadfast through every phase of Nashville’s evolution. “He’s one of the few people you’ll meet that nobody has anything bad to say about,” Johnson adds.
Jamey Johnson’s Lasting Legacy
A ten-time GRAMMY nominee and Grand Ole Opry member, Jamey Johnson has long been considered one of the finest storytellers of his generation. He is one of only two artists ever, alongside Kris Kristofferson, to win both CMA and ACM Song of the Year in the same year, for In Color and Give It Away.
Beyond his own hits, his songs have been recorded by George Strait, Trace Adkins, Willie Nelson, and Lainey Wilson. Recent TV appearances have further cemented his status as a torchbearer for authentic country songwriting, from Willie Nelson’s 90th Birthday Celebration to Toby Keith: American Icon.
“He is a first-rate preservationist of classic country songwriting.” — The New York Times
Never Gonna Be now stands as a reflection on perseverance, mentorship, and the friendships that shape a career. For Jamey Johnson, the song that once defined his early struggles has become a celebration of how far he has come.
