Dolly Parton: Access All Areas

Dolly Parton is a household name, even for those who aren’t country music fans. She released her debut album in 1967. Before that, she started writing songs for other musicians. So, you’ve probably enjoyed her music, even if you didn’t realise it at the time. You might also have watched her films, read one of her books, or benefited from one of her charitable ventures.
Dolly’s Early Life
Before all of that, she was born into a farming family on January 19, 1946, and was one of 12 children. The family lived in Sevier County, Tennessee.
Dolly became the most famous member of the Parton family, but several of her siblings and their mum loved to sing, including her late brother, Floyd, who worked with Dolly on songwriting and even performed in some of her films. Her sister Stella Parton is also a singer/songwriter with a large following of her own.
Dolly was just 10 years old when she started appearing on local radio and television, and 13 when she performed at the legendary Grand Ole Opry.
Her Early Career
Dolly’s early success contributed to her decision to move to Nashville after graduation, but she still had to work hard to keep her career growing. This included joining the Porter Waggoner show, which despite allowing her to work on her songwriting alongside a well-known country star, turned sour when she went solo. Dolly wanted to pursue a music career in her own right, but had to pay out more money than she had at the time when Porter sued her.
Dolly Parton’s Marriage to Carl Dean

While Dolly Parton’s career has changed throughout the years, with each new achievement, her marriage to Carl Dean has been the one constant thing in her life.
The pair married in 1966, two years after meeting in Nashville. One of the things that drew her to him was the way he talked to her like a regular person. He doesn’t hog the limelight, preferring to stay in the background, but it’s clear that he supports her career from behind the scenes.
Another reason their marriage works is because, in her words, they are opposites. Dolly respected Carl’s wishes to stay out of the limelight, he keeps her grounded and they always make time for each other. Sadly, Carl passed on March 3rd, 2025, at the age of 82.
Dolly and Carl have no children, despite considering it. While her career was important to her, it was her hysterectomy that took away the choice. But Dolly’s positive outlook on life means that despite wondering what life as a mother would have been like, she can see how this allowed her to focus more on her career. With so many siblings, she still has nieces, nephews and godchildren to focus her love and attention on.
Relatable Songs Such as Coat of Many Colours

One thing that helped to grow Dolly’s fanbase was the relatability of her songs. While she went on to make her fortune, she didn’t start out wealthy. Coat of Many Colors is one example of this. In typical country music style, it tells a story.
In the song, her mother lovingly sews her a coat which other children ridicule her for, but she appreciates the love and time that went into it, in lieu of having the money to buy an expensive alternative.
Of course, most of us can also relate to 9 to 5, and Jolene. Dolly has previously said that many of us have a ‘Jolene’ at some point in our relationships. So, it’s no surprise that these songs helped to propel her to success. A woman who flirted with Dolly’s husband inspired the song, but her name wasn’t Jolene.
Dolly Parton’s Music and Collaborations
Dolly Parton is best known for being the Queen of Country, but she has crossed into other genres, such as pop, gospel and even rock. This has included solo hits and working with so many different artists. It’s impossible to mention them all.
In 1983, Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers released Islands in the Stream. In contrast, Dolly teamed up with Miley Cyrus for the 2023 NBC special Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party. They dueted on Wrecking Ball, and I Will Always Love You. Miley, who is her goddaughter, is also her distant cousin.

Dolly also released the album, Rockstar, in November 2023, where she teamed up with Sting, Steven Tyler, Sheryl Crow and Linda Perry, among others, showing her versatility in the music industry.
In 2016, Dolly and her sister Stella Parton recorded a duet of More Power To Ya, showing that despite the usual sibling rivalry, their sister bond still remains strong.
It was in 2014 that she took to the legendary pyramid stage at Glastonbury, watch the ultimate escapism below:
Acting and Producing
Despite dominating the country music genre and showing she can more than hold her own in other musical genres, Dolly Parton has also achieved success as an actress and producer.
Perhaps the most famous of her roles was in 9 to 5 in which three frustrated women decide to kidnap and take over from their boss. She was nominated for 2 Golden Globes for her role in 9 to 5, as well as an Oscar for ‘Best Music, Original Song’.
She’s also acted in films such as A Smoky Mountain Christmas, and Steel Magnolias.
Buffy The Vampire Fans may not know that Dolly was an uncredited producer on the show starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, and in the 1992 film where Kirsty Swanson played the title role.
Awards and nominations
Over the decades, Dolly has stacked up more than 50 wins and over 150 nominations, the majority of which were for her music. These include Christopher Awards, Prime Time Emmy Awards, and People’s Choice.
Notably, in 1984, Dolly Parton was awarded a coveted star on the Walk of Fame and now has two stars, and in 2019, she won the honorary CinEuphoria Career Award.
Dolly Parton’s Song Writing for Other Artists
Dolly hasn’t just written songs for herself. She’s penned songs for many other musicians too. She estimates that she’s written/co-written over 3000 songs in total.
One of the most famous of these is Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You. Dolly also wrote There’ll Always Be Music for Tina Turner.
Many fans believe that Dolly wrote I Will Always Love You on the same day as Jolene. However, she says that although they were on the same cassette, she may have written them a few days apart.
Dolly’s Charitable work

Despite her success and celebrity, Dolly still tries to do her best to help the causes she feels passionate about.
One of these is the Imagination Library, a charitable program she set up in 1995 to ensure children have access to books up to the age of five. This gives them a stronger start in learning to read. One impressive milestone for the charity was reaching the 150 million mark in 2020 for the number of books sent to children all over the world, which reached an impressive 2 million sent each month by 2022.
This alone would be impressive, but Dolly really likes to give back whenever she can. Over the years, The Dollywood Foundation has donated to animal charities, scholarships and COVID-19 vaccine research.
Dolly Parton’s Writing Career
Not content with singing, songwriting, acting, or helping children to access books, Dolly has also written and co-written several of her own books.
Not surprisingly, some of these share details of her life and career, such as ‘Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics’ and ‘Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones’.
She has also ventured into writing for children with ‘Billy the Kid Makes It Big’ and ‘Billy the Kid Comes Home for Christmas’.
In 2022, Dolly Parton teamed up with author James Patterson in 2022, to co-write ‘Run Rose Run’. The novel used Patterson’s crime writing skills and Dolly’s intricate knowledge of the country music world to create a page-turning thriller that became a Sunday Times bestseller.
Dolly Parton Now

After all of that, Dolly Parton shows no signs of retiring yet. At the time of writing, her most recent book is ‘Good Lookin’ Cookin’: A Year of Meals – A Lifetime of Family, Friends, and Food’, which was released in October 2024.
She received the PEACE Through Music Award, also in October, for her charitable work.
In 2025, Dolly will be touring “Threads: My Songs in Symphony”, which she describes as a travelling multimedia symphonic storytelling experience.
In 2026, she plans to launch a Broadway musical, based on her life which she is writing new songs for, to feature alongside some of her biggest hits. There’s certainly a lot of material to make the musical appeal to both new and existing fans.
Over the years, Dolly Parton has proven herself and refused to be pigeonholed, despite being a country music icon. If she wants to do something, she does it, and that’s why we all love her.
