Steve Earle Invited to Join the Grand Ole Opry

In a moment of pure country music history, multi-Grammy® Award-winning artist Steve Earle was officially invited to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry. The honor was delivered onstage by none other than Opry legend and longtime friend Vince Gill during Saturday night’s show.

The emotional moment came after Earle’s powerful performance of his signature hit, “Copperhead Road.” Gill, presenting Earle with a custom Grand Ole Opry 100th Anniversary guitar strap, said, “You have to be an Opry member to have one of these. We want to invite you to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry.”

A visibly moved Earle responded, “This is kind of the biggest thing that has ever happened to me in my life.” He then launched into a heartfelt rendition of “Hillbilly Highway,” another classic from his storied career.

Steve Earle’s induction is especially significant as he becomes the first new member invited during the Opry’s 100th year—marking a historic moment for both the artist and the institution.

About Steve Earle

Widely regarded as one of the most influential singer-songwriters of the last three decades, Steve Earle’s impact on music spans far beyond country alone. Mentored by legends like Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, Earle exploded onto the scene with his 1986 debut Guitar Town, which reached #1 on the country charts and became a cornerstone of the Americana genre.

His 1988 classic Copperhead Road was officially named a state song of Tennessee in 2023. Beyond his albums, Earle has written novels (I’ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive), short stories (Dog House Roses), and contributed as a producer for greats like Joan Baez and Lucinda Williams.

As an actor, he’s had recurring roles in hit HBO series like The Wire and Tremé, and he continues to host his acclaimed SiriusXM show, Hard Core Troubadour. Earle was also inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2020.
