Stephen Wilson Jr. Just Picked Up His First ACM Award

Stephen Wilson Jr. officially has his first ACM Award – and honestly, it feels like one that makes perfect sense for him.
Ahead of ACM week properly kicking off, Stephen took home Visual Media of the Year for “Cuckoo,” the striking video he co-directed alongside longtime collaborator Tim Cofield. The surprise presentation happened during WXPN’s NON-COMMvention event earlier this week, marking another major moment in what’s already been a huge run for him lately.
And if you’ve been paying attention to the way Stephen’s career has been building over the last couple of years, this doesn’t really feel accidental.
Stephen Wilson Jr. Has Built His Own Lane Completely
Part of what makes Stephen stand out right now is that nothing about his rise feels overly manufactured.
Even “Cuckoo” itself is a pretty good example of that. The video is creative, strange in places, emotionally heavy in others, and never feels like it’s chasing what country music visuals are “supposed” to look like. It feels fully connected to the world Stephen’s been building since søn of dad first started pulling people in.
That’s probably why fans have attached themselves to him so strongly. He’s never really sounded like anybody else.
Stephen Wilson Jr.’s Momentum Keeps Growing
The ACM win arrives at a pretty interesting moment too.
Stephen’s current single “Gary” has started climbing country radio, he’s coming off a completely sold-out run on the first leg of the Gary The Torch Tour, and his live reputation just keeps getting bigger. Between appearances on shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live! and touring opportunities alongside names like Dave Matthews and Brandi Carlile, it feels like he’s crossing into a completely different level of visibility now.
But the interesting thing is that none of it seems to be changing the core of what makes him work.
He still feels like an artist doing things entirely on his own terms.
Stephen Wilson Jr. Feels Like One Of Country’s Most Interesting Artists Right Now
Country music’s in a really interesting place at the moment where audiences seem far more open to artists pulling from outside influences and refusing to fit neatly into one category.
Stephen fits naturally into that shift.
There’s country in what he does, obviously, but there’s also rock, folk, grunge, Americana and something slightly left-of-centre running through all of it too. Winning an ACM Award for visual storytelling rather than a traditional radio category somehow feels very on brand because so much of Stephen’s appeal comes from the full world he creates around the music.
And judging by the momentum behind him right now, this probably won’t be the last award conversation he ends up in either.
