Jacksonville’s Small Town Success Story

Riley Green is the embodiment of a small town success story, so let’s dive into the journey of ‘The Duckman’…

Who Is Riley Duckman?

Born on October 18, 1988, in Jacksonville, Alabama, Riley Green’s journey to country music prominence is a testament to his deep-rooted Southern heritage and immense dedication to his craft. He grew up in a close-knit family, and it will be no surprise that he was profoundly influenced by his grandfather, Buford Green. Buford’s passion for traditional country music introduced Riley to the timeless sounds of legends like George Jones, Roy Acuff, Merle Haggard, and Hank Williams. This early exposure ignited a lifelong love for the genre in Riley… and boy are we forever grateful for that.

Buford Green’s influence extended beyond music appreciation – as he established the Golden Saw Music Hall on his property, a unique venue adorned with rustic decor, including a tree in the kitchen and a possum hanging from the stage. It was here, in the eclectic setting that Riley initially started performing, as the venue became a nurturing ground for local talent.

From Quarter Back to Rising Country Star

Before the neon-lit honkytonks and music row lured him in, Green pursued athletics, playing as a Division 1 FCS quarterback at Jacksonville State University. Despite his athletic endeavours, music remained a constant in his life… and gradually overshadowed his day eventual day job as a construction worker. He started taking a music career seriously when his original songs in his sets started to receive lots of praise.

It was in 2013 that Green released his self-titled EP, marking the beginning of his recording career. Over the next few years, he continued to produce music independently, releasing additional EPs year on year. His authentic storytelling and traditional country sound resonated with a growing fan base, leading to his signing with Big Machine Label Group in 2018.

Green’s debut single under the label, “There Was This Girl,” showcased his contemporary country style and storytelling prowess – with the accompanying music video further amplified his visibility in the country music scene. Little did we know how much he’d rock the world of Youtube videos years down the line…

Established As a Heartfelt Storyteller

Later on in 2019, Green unveiled “I Wish Grandpas Never Died,” a deeply personal song reflecting his close bond with his grandparents. This heartfelt track racked up a whopping 39M views on Youtube alone and supercharged his name on the country music stage. The following year, in 2020, he was honoured with the Academy of Country Music’s (ACM) New Male Artist of the Year award.

Fast forward to 2024, he released his third studio album, “Don’t Mind If I Do,” on his birthday. The 18-track album reflects his commitment to traditional country music and features collaborations with artists like Ella Langley. Green described the album as a reflection of his roots, stating, “This new album is a throwback to the era when I first became a fan.”

Riley Duckman’s appeal extends beyond the United States, as he took to the stage in Sydney in October 2024, making his debut in Australia, headlining the Ridin’ Hearts festival at Sydney Olympic Park. His collaboration with Ella Langley, “You Look Like You Love Me,” went viral, amassing over 104 million streams and 1.5 million social media posts!

Despite his widespread success, Green remains deeply connected to his roots in Jacksonville, Alabama. He attributes much of his character and musical inspiration to his grandparents, acknowledging their significant influence on his life and career. Green’s journey from local performer to country music star exemplifies the impact of authenticity, hard work, and staying true to one’s heritage.
