Dolly Parton Marked 80th Birthday with New Charity Single
Dolly Parton celebrated her 80th birthday on January 19th with a major philanthropic gesture rather than a party. The country music icon released a reimagined version of her classic song “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” to support pediatric cancer research.
For this special 50th-anniversary recording, Parton was joined by a powerhouse group of female artists: Miley Cyrus, Lainey Wilson, Reba McEntire, and Queen Latifah. The updated arrangement also featured David Foster on piano and backing vocals by The Christ Church Choir.
Supporting a Cause Close to Heart
True to the giving spirit that has defined her career, Dolly Parton donated all net proceeds from the song and its accompanying music video to the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tennessee.
The funds were designated for the hospital’s pediatric cancer research program. This contribution continued a long partnership between Parton and Vanderbilt; she famously donated $1 million to the medical center in 2020 to support Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine research.
The History of “Light of a Clear Blue Morning”
The song choice was deeply personal for the singer. Dolly Parton originally wrote “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” in 1976 during a turbulent transition in her career. It was penned while she was separating from her longtime mentor and musical partner, Porter Wagoner, to pursue a solo career—a move that sparked a famous feud and legal battle between the two.
Parton has often described the track as her “song of deliverance,” written when she needed to visualize a brighter future for herself. It originally appeared on her 1977 album New Harvest… First Gathering.
Regarding the new release, Parton noted the significance of bringing friends along for this new version:
“I am really excited to share my brand new video for ‘Light of a Clear Blue Morning.’ Now, I first wrote this song back in 1976, when I needed a little hope. This time around, I’ve invited some very special women, some real shining lights, to help me bring that hope to life again.”
By gathering such high-profile talent for this release, Dolly Parton continued to leverage her influence to drive charitable impact, ensuring her 80th birthday left a lasting mark on the children at Vanderbilt Hospital.
