ALBUM REVIEW: FLOW STATE (Keith Urban)

Keith Urban’s new album Flow State is a bit of a departure from what his die-hard fans usually expect from the country star. It would appear that Keith is in his “yacht rock” era but the numbers don’t lie and it would seem we’re not mad about it. Although some have said this might be one of the most unexpected releases of his career. Stepping away from the heavy rock- country guitar riffs that make his music instantly recognizable he’s given us a collection of classic soft-rock re-imagined favorites.
The album’s standout track is undoubtedly “We Go Back,” the only original song on the record (maybe that’s why it stands out?? Either way it’s a great song). Featuring the legendary Michael McDonald, it tells of loves lost and second chances. With the guitar intro to die for it’s the closest we’ll get to “traditional” Keith while still keeping up with this new sound.
“On and On” also stands out as a classic song of the summer. Add it to your vacation playlist and sit back and relax.
A personal favorite is “Guitar Man,” featuring John Mayer. An absolute dream pairing of two of the finest guitarists in modern music. If you like Keith for his musical prowess then this one is for you. Fans can only hope that a live collaboration is in the works for the future.
While some fans may miss the more personal songwriting of Keith’s usual sound, this isn’t too far of a departure to alienate the core audience but it is a way to garner new fans that might not be die-hard “country” listeners. In a way it’s genius. Casting the net wider and gathering new listeners while giving your loyal fans a summer playlist for the beach. Smart if you think about it.
